How do I start weight lifting with the best results?

I'm going to get a gym membership this summer and I need some guidance on how to gain muscle, what areas to work out, how to use equipment, etc. I'm 17 and I'm about 5'10" tall and very light at around 126 lbs. I never lifted weights before so I need some kind of system to gain muscle by the end of the summer. I'm doing this so I can be better at the sports I play.
