Weight lifting routines or advice?

Hello everyone! I'm 5'3, 23 years old, and currently i weigh 153 pounds... I want to lose weight and i know that in order to do so i need a balance of cardio and weight training. I don't want to bulk up. I just want to get some strength and lose my fat.

So my friend said that if you lift heavy weights and do it in small amounts you will get bigger but if you lift light weights and do it more times you will get strength. Is that true? if thats true should i lift the lighter weights in sets or just do as many as i can?
Can you guys also give me some diet and weight training routine advice for someone around my height, age, and weight? I know this sounds like a lot of things I'm asking for but really..i don't get that calorie stuff..so a site would be useful but personal experiences tips would even be better.

much obliged for your time. ^_^

1. if ur aiming to lose fat id really recommend sprints...high intensity cardio. google it. and what ur buddy said is true..a lot of weight + less reps=bulk. less weight+more reps=toned

2. set a strong workout schedule , if you need too. find some friends that will workout with you. push your self that extra mile when running. start at a slow pace. and build your way up. remember if your comfortable that you arent getting the correct workout
