Does weight training for men help reduce adominal fat as study shows for women? The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and is being presented Friday at an American Heart Association conference in Phoenix showing the merits of weight training in women to reduce adominal fat(Web site article below). My question is does this also apply to men? I am overweight and walking a good amount(1 hour 5 days per week). Suggestions for a woman weight-training for weight loss? I don't want to be all muscley or anything, but I keep hearing how if you want to lose weight you have to weight train so you lose fat not muscle and increase your metabolism. So I am wondering what kinds of things I should be doing each day and for how long. Just some simple things I can do at home. I don't have any weights but I'll get some when I know what to do. DVDs for weight training for women? I'm looking for a DVD that would guide me in weight training for a woman. I'm currently a complete weakling. I'm 138 pounds and hope to drop down to 120 if not 115. I'm starting 15 minutes of cardio ellipitical every day and want to add weights into my training but into the amount of actually gaining strength, not just toning. any ideas on how to get start, easy home equipment? i'd like to just use dumbbells (10 pounders max is this is enough?), and DVDs that would be great to start with. any ideas are appreciated thank you!
weight training safety and effectiveness for women? I read that when doing aerobic exercise, it is important to drink water, doing warm up, stretch, and stretch again after finishing. What about weight training, what are some steps I need to do to ensure safety and effectiveness during and after training? I'm training at home with the two 5 pounds weights. Also, I also heard somewhere that you shouldn't work on the same muscle continuously. Like, if you work on your arms, you shouldn't work on your arm again the next day but wait until the day after that. Something about muscle recovery. Is that true?
Weight Training for Women? What to do? I need to start lifting weights. Basically when I do weights how many reps to I do and how many times? are there any free websites out there that can tell me what to do? I'm so new
Can anyone give me tips on weight loss and weight training for women? I've always been known as "The Bigger Girl" and I'm ready for a change in my life. I've tried diets, running on an elliptical until I couldn't see straight and lifting weights until I couldn't move (I'm sure I was doing it wrong). Nothing works. What the scale says really does not matter to me but what I see in the mirror does. I realize I've got a very long way to go until I'll be at my goal and I've decided to give myself 1 year to start seeing a change. If not, I've made an appointment for a consultation with a plastic surgeon for Summer 2010. I need to find a full program that can be broken down into separate days (ie: Arms - Monday, Thursday). Someone please help.

Does anyone know a great place in san diego to get one on one weight lifting training? I'm a 21 year old female, 5'7" (130lbs) with a skinier frame and i want to bulk up. I want to have strong definition all over my body, basically, I want to look like Jackie Warner on Bravo's show series Workout. I've been looking for a place that offers personal training to achieve this goal but I can't seem to find just the right place. Does anyone have any suggestions? Wondering what type of weight-training equipment to buy? I am serious about starting weight-training, into my fitness plan. I want one for home use. First, I considered getting a basic, weight-bench for this, but I am not so sure, now . .if this will do. My goal is to weight-train for building strength, but slightly building lean, toned muscles . . . not for big, bulging muscles. I am a petite, but healthy-weight woman, who is aiming for lean, feminine look, but strong build. So, based on this info that I have given, which type will be more suitable, and effective to achieve this? A weight-bench for bench pressing free-weights OR a weight-train machine that has weight-blocks on it with pulleys? Or both? I am not an expert on this, so I am kindly asking: Do YOU have an answer that may help me with this decision? All answers will be appreciated! Angela
Dating a Woman who does weight training? This is targeted for men but woman can answer. Would you ever date a woman who does weight training and why? If not what puts you off... okay not talking about getting massive that you look like a man.. but just about the right muscles in the right place and being firm. Ladies please I dont take steroids & have no intentions of looking like a man. And the best answer will get my user name on the dating site to check out the bod in 11 weeks
What girls are afraid of weight training? I just wondered why women and girls are so afraid to lift weights? Are you afraid? if so why? Or do you love it like me? I lift and do cardio about 6 days a week and it not only tones your body but makes you look lean and healthy. I don't get why people want to be so stick skinny. I love lifting and it works. I meant girls around 18 years of age and up I am sorry for the confusion, I myself did not lift as a young teen either.
women? do you weight train? do you weight train? what do you think of weight training? do you think it is necesarry for fitness? what do you do? would you hire a female personal trainer?
Ladies...how do you feel about weight training for women? Do you think they should do it? Should they lift heavy or light? What are the benefits and downsides? Do you do it? Do you like it? If you don't do it, would you do it? Just looking for some honest opinions here? Hey everyone...I appreciate the opinions. I already have my own ideas about it. First is, women will never get as bulky as men, they lack the testosterone to be able to do so. Many female bodybuilders take steroids. The ones who don't train very hard and have been training for a long time. They follow strict diets and eat to gain muscle. A women who doesn't follow a strict plan will never look like a bodybuilder. Second is, because you can't bulk up that much, there's no reason to lift light. Lifting heavy will get you where you want faster. Finally, aside from increased metabolism and the hot body, weight training is very important for women (maybe moreso than for men) because as women age they tend to lose bone density, particularly after menopause, which leaves them with a higher chance of getting osteoporosis than men. Weight training increases bone density. Basically weight training is the best way for women to ensure they'll live a long, healthy, and fulfilling lifestyle.
Is there a maximum recommended dumbell weight for women's strength training? Hi, so I understand women should lift heavy weight to lose fat which is what I have been doing for 2 months and which has worked extremely effectively for fat loss. I also know women getting too bulky from weight training is a myth and that it is rare due to our mucher lower testosterone, but what I am confused about is that I have rapidly progressed and currently use 8kilo (17.5 pound) dumbells in each hand for major body exercises and a little lighter for the various arm exercises and as I reach a point of being able to do more than16 reps for 5-8 sets I go up in weight and my trainer believes I will soon be progressing to 10 kilo dumbells (22 pounds) in each hand for 8 sets of 8 reps. That seems like a lot and I can't seem to find much reference to this on the net. Is there a point where weights are so heavy that women actually do bulk? I am really only looking to lose weight and keep a toned body.
does weight training make women bulky? will it just put muscle underneath their fat or will it burn away the fat, add more muscle, and reveal the muscle that was underneath the fat? so confused haha. sweet thanks! that really helped :)
Weight training for women website? I'm looking to start lifting weights to tone and sculpt and I've looked at several books (which all seem to be pretty expensive and/or don't give me enough information). Does anyone know of any good websites that list (and possibly has pictures that demonstrate) specific exercises used to tone specific areas for women? All I've found is http://www.strength-training-woman.com/ which is okay but I'm looking for more. If you know of any great websites, please let me know!
What were your results with cardio AND strength training for weight loss (women)? I've done quite a bit of research on the benefits of cardio vs strength training vs a combination of both- and it's pretty debatable. That being said- please, no lectures. It seems to me that every side has a study to back up their claims- which is fine :) All exercise is good in one way or another. I am simply curious as to the actual results women have had with toning their bodies through strength training as well as doing moderate to heavy cardio on a daily basis. So, if you could please tell me how often/how much you did cardio and strength training (for example, 6 days/week, 30 mins Cardio, 30 mins ST), as well as how many pounds and inches you lost in a month, that would be extremely helpful and much appreciated. Thanks! (Also, sorry if this has already been asked- it seems like I looked everywhere, but I might have missed something.)
Can weight training in for women while on maintenance calories cause clothes to fit tighter? Hi,to clarify, I am not a novice to the fitness world. Far from it, I was a cardio bunny--skinny with very little upper body muscle--till I chanced upon p90x. since then I've done two rounds of p90x--yes the entire program sticking to it like 99%--one round of X plus, and then combo with Insanity, Brazil, and then combo with Chalean Extreme and Brazil. I always add 5-7 more sessions of cardio (Jogging, sprints) while on a resistance program. Since Chalean, which focuses more than p90x on lower body work (lunges deadlifts squats) and while on a super duper clean athlete's (think 6-7 meals with 35% lean protein, 45% low glycemic carb, and 15% good fat ratio) maintenance diet with an occasional red wine or splurge here and there, I gained like an inch overall. My biceps and shoulders became visibly thicker as did the pecs--with the result that bras are tighter. however, to my dismay, so are my pants. Because I started skating and skiing and playing soccer at an early age, I already had muscular thick legs and am a mesomorph with hourglass to pear shape. however, my legs now feel more solid than ever and the longer muscle groups particularly the quads and hams are more defined. Though not a novice to fitness and actually well-read on the subject (it's sort of my hobby), I was under the impression that as a woman I could not 'bulk up'. I did supplement with glutamine and whey and amino acid complex but didn't take anything else (not even creatine). I know that as a mesomorph I am more predisposed to building muscle. I also added cardio regularly and even brought in stuff from p90x (plyo, kenpo). however, I read that muscle takes up about 22% less space than fat--that means it still takes up 78% AS MUCH (emphasis) space. Could it be that I did not lose any fat BUT gained muscle and so my clothes fit tighter? Trust me I am not trying to make excuses for poor eating habits--I am very disciplined and actually detest junk. I'm 5 4 and usually in the 115 to 117 range but haven't weighed myself--my guess is I'm up to 120 now; I just measured and I'm up by an inch all over. I used to be 18% BF but my guess is now I'm down to something like 16.5 %. My question is--could clothes fit tighter as a result of weight training while on a maintenance diet? I was lifting pretty heavy weights --almost as much as Chalene, and doing the correct number of reps to near or complete failure. Also, what shall I do now? Should I try to catabolize the muscle? Oh also, I've been noticing a huge increase in appetite (usually craving more protein actually)--could it be that I built muscle and as a result have increased my metabolic rate (RMR)? --though the rate at which muscle contributes to calories burned is debated. I'm now trying to do 2 solid hours of cardio and 1200 calories a day to blast off the fat and/or breakdown the muscle! Please help! Oh I should add that while I could maintain this regimen of 1200 calories plus cardio easily before resistance training, now I find it's almost hellish and torturous. I get regular dizzy spells, black spots in front of my eyes, some trembling and cold sweat, I guess some signs of low blood sugar (yes even when eating every 2.5 to 3.5 hours just b/c the calories are capped at 1250 even taking into account splenda and lettuce!). I used to have a subscription to body bugg so I know that with this level of exercise I'm burning approx 2250 calories a day); 1000 calorie deficit shouldn't be too much but I fear my body might be going into starvation and/or overtraining alarm mode. Could this be true? Any tips on ridding myself of the lower body muscle (yeah yeah I know it boosts the metabolism but what's the point in that if I can no longer fit well into my size 4s, muscle is still more volume. I don't care about the number on the scale per se; I just don't want thicker legs no wonder how sol
weight training for women? Tips for someone who wants to start doing weights? I was once using a hip abductor machine when a female trainer walks in. I was doing about 130lbs I believe but she tells me that's wrong for women. She then moves it to about 80lbs. She told me that for women to get 'fit', they don't over do it, instead they start out somewhere really low for a longer period of time. Is this true? Or should I try to work out my muscle more because at 80lbs I didn't feel the burning sensation I felt at 130lbs. It was fairly easy, felt too easy. I wish to lose weight and tone up. I did start out low and worked my way to 130lbs but that trainer said to stay at 80lbs because it is better way for women to tone up.
weight training for women? Hi guys am a mature lady who would like to start weight training at home what size weights should I start with and would any one know a good beginners training dvd or routine thanks sue
How often should women weight train? I'm trying to tone my arms a bit. I've read some places women should do it almost everyday and some said every second and so forth. What should I do?
Affordable women's weight training or lifting in NYC? I blow glass, which is a physically demanding art. I have a small frame (5'6", 105 lbs, slender build/bone structure) and because the scale of my concepts is often beyond what I can physically lift and/or manipulate, I must rely on strong male assistants most of the time once it gets past a certain size/weight (when dealing with spinning, molten glass, 20 lbs feels like 100.) I'd like to get to a point where I can handle most of my own work. I live in NYC (Brooklyn), and I want to find a weight training class to build strength, particularly arms, wrists, and abdominal muscles. My body is different from a man's, so I'd like something tailored to women, but not simply "toning" for aesthetics - I need STRENGTH. I cannot afford a personal trainer, unless there are some cheap ones hiding out there. My budget is $100/mo or less, though if there is something really amazing out there I may be able to scrape up a bit more. I would prefer something either in North Brooklyn or in proximity to 14th st in Manhattan (where I work), but I am open to most of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and if it's reaaaallly great, maybe parts of Queens off the G or R. Thanks for the help!
How can you weight train for more curves? In other words how can you get a bigger butt, thighs, and chest with weight training? I know that some women weight train to get bigger muscles/bulk up. Maybe it won't get your body a whole lot bigger, but using heavy weights must do something (at least tone), right? Female body builders have big muscles. I already do squats, lunges, bench presses, etc. with 10 pound dumbells. If I continue, how will my body look? What else can I do?
Why do many women fear becoming "bulky" if they do any weight/strength training? A female friend has told me she doesn't want to "get bulky" from weight training. I've also heard/read this from other women. I told her that the most "bulky" women work out many hours a week. The average person in a gym doesn't work out near that intensity. Plus, women simply don't have the testosterone levels to really build bulky muscles. Even women I've seen who do hit the weights regularly look sculpted/toned but not bulky.
weight training for women? i want to tone up just a little bit more... i'm 5'4" and 113 lbs so i'm not heavy and dont have much fat to lose but I was just wondering what type of weight training routine would be good for me to get results... like how long i need to weight train/ how many days per week and what kind of exercises should i be doing.. thanks!
Best way for a woman to start weight training? I have never lifted weights before but I really want my arms toned up and defined. What am I best starting on and what should I be doing? I have 1kg weights and also A resistance tube. Thanks for any advice.
